Ducane is a specialist housing association that houses postgraduate students and key workers studying at University of London, for example, nurses, laboratory technicians, and non-medical staff working for the NHS and teachers We will also consider applications from other key public sector workers.
Some of our homes however, (Du Cane House) are reserved for borough key worker nominees from by the local authority, Hammersmith and Fulham.
If Ducane is unable to help with housing because you are not eligible to apply, then you may want to consider possible alternatives. Local authorities have limited resources and will target their resources on those for whom they have a statutory responsibility. This generally means those defined as being homeless and vulnerable (for example someone with a mental illness) or in priority need (for example having children).
The options are to register on the local authority Waiting List, but beware you may wait forever in London if you are not in priority need. If you are made an offer it is likely that you will be offered short term temporary accommodation, before getting an offer of a council or housing association place.
Alternatively, you could approach housing associations. See the link with the National Housing Federation (NHF) website www.housing.org.uk . The NHF is the national trade body representing housing associations. Some like Ducane are specialist and may possibly be able to assist if you are in the category of those that they assist. Ring to find out if you are eligible or check their web site. Most are likely to refer you to their own (very full) waiting list.
However, you could think about shared ownership. This is part rent, part mortgage payments enabling you to own your own home eventually. See the NHF web site www.housing.org.uk for those housing associations in your area who offer this. You will need to satisfy certain minimum income criteria to go on their list.
